The Nine Centers in Human Design
The BodyGraph contains nine geometric shapes called Centers. They evolved from the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system, expanded from seven to nine to reflect what Ra Uru Hu described as humanity's transition from seven-centered to nine-centered beings — a shift he dated to approximately 1781. Each Center governs a specific domain of human experience, has biological correlates in the body, and either receives or generates a particular quality of energy.
Defined and Undefined Centers
A Center is defined (colored in the chart) when it has at least one fully activated Channel running through it — both Gates of that Channel present in the chart, on either the Personality or Design side. A defined Center operates in a consistent, fixed way. It is a reliable part of who you are and cannot be significantly altered by the energy of others.
A Center is undefined (white) when no Channel through it is fully activated. Undefined Centers are receptive. They take in and amplify the energy of defined Centers in the people around them. This amplification is the primary mechanism of conditioning: we experience the undefined center's energy more intensely from others than they experience it themselves, and over time we can begin to make decisions from that amplified, borrowed energy as if it were our own.
A completely open Center — one with no activated Gates at all — is the most receptive and the most vulnerable to conditioning.
Understanding which of your Centers are defined and undefined is foundational to recognizing where your reliable energy lives and where you are susceptible to outside influence.
Head Center
Location: Top of the BodyGraph. Function: Pressure to ask questions; inspiration.
The Head Center is a pressure center. It generates mental pressure — the urge to find answers, make sense of things, and resolve uncertainty. A defined Head Center produces a consistent source of inspiration and mental questioning. A person with an undefined Head Center takes in the mental pressure of those around them, often finding themselves preoccupied with questions that are not actually theirs to answer. The not-self pattern is thinking you must solve every question that crosses your mind.
Ajna Center
Location: Just below the Head Center. Function: Mental processing, conceptualization, and analysis.
The Ajna (sometimes called the Mind Center) is the center of mental processing — where raw inspiration from the Head is sorted, conceptualized, and analyzed. It is not a decision-making center. A defined Ajna processes information in a fixed, reliable way — a consistent perspective or mental framework. An undefined Ajna can absorb and appreciate multiple mental frameworks and perspectives. The not-self pattern of the undefined Ajna is pretending to be certain when you are not — adopting fixed opinions to fit in or avoid the discomfort of not knowing.
Throat Center
Location: Center of the BodyGraph. Function: Communication, manifestation, and expression.
The Throat is the most connected Center in the BodyGraph. It is the center of expression — the place where energy becomes word, action, or manifestation. All energy in the chart ultimately seeks to move toward the Throat. A defined Throat Center produces a consistent mode of expression. An undefined Throat Center adapts its communication style to the environment and may feel pressure to speak or attract attention, even when there is nothing pressing to say.
G Center (Identity Center)
Location: Center of the BodyGraph, below the Throat. Function: Identity, direction, and love.
The G Center carries your sense of self, your life direction, and the frequency of love. It is the magnetic center — the Magnetic Monopole, in Ra's cosmology, resides here, driving the vehicle of the body through life along its unique trajectory. A defined G Center provides a stable, consistent sense of identity and direction. An undefined G Center searches for identity through environments and relationships, naturally asking "Who am I? Where am I going?" The not-self pattern is staying in the wrong environment or wrong relationships in an attempt to find a fixed self — when the real gift is the ability to taste many expressions of identity.
Heart Center (Ego Center / Will Center)
Location: Small triangle in the center-left area. Function: Willpower, ego, material world, and self-worth.
The Heart Center (also called the Ego Center or Will Center) is a motor — one of four in the chart. It drives willpower, making and keeping commitments, and the capacity to engage with the material world. A defined Heart Center provides consistent willpower and a stable sense of self-worth. An undefined Heart Center does not have reliable access to willpower — the not-self pattern is making promises to prove worth or belonging, and then being unable to sustain them. People with an undefined Heart Center are not designed to rely on willpower; they thrive by following their Authority instead.
Sacral Center
Location: Large square in the lower-center area. Function: Life force, fertility, sexuality, and work capacity.
The Sacral Center is the most powerful motor in the chart. It generates renewable life force energy — the raw fuel for engagement, work, and creation. It is also the center of sexuality and fertility. A defined Sacral Center (present in Generators and Manifesting Generators) produces a consistent tank of energy that must be used and discharged each day. An undefined Sacral Center — found in all Projectors, all Reflectors, and all Manifestors — does not generate this consistent energy. These Types are designed to work differently: in focused bursts (Manifestors), in guided efficiency (Projectors), or in fluid response to the lunar cycle (Reflectors). The not-self pattern of the undefined Sacral is taking in and amplifying Sacral energy from others, then burning out from overextension.
Splenic Center
Location: Left side of the BodyGraph. Function: Intuition, instinct, timing, immunity, and survival awareness.
The Spleen is the oldest awareness center in the chart, operating in the present moment. It communicates through subtle, instantaneous physical sensations — a quiet yes or no that passes once and does not repeat. A defined Splenic Center provides consistent intuitive awareness and a natural sense of timing and physical wellbeing. An undefined Splenic Center amplifies the fear and survival awareness of others. The not-self pattern is holding on to things — relationships, situations, jobs — that no longer serve health, out of fear of letting go.
Solar Plexus Center (Emotional Center)
Location: Right side of the BodyGraph. Function: Emotions, desire, and emotional awareness.
The Solar Plexus (also called the Emotional Center) is both a motor and an awareness center. It operates in waves — cycling through highs, lows, and neutral states in its own rhythm. A defined Solar Plexus means emotional energy is a consistent, powerful force that moves in waves. Truth for these individuals emerges over time, not in a single moment — which is why Emotional Authority is the highest Authority in the hierarchy. An undefined Solar Plexus takes in and amplifies the emotional energy of defined Solar Plexus people in their environment. The not-self pattern is avoiding confrontation and sidestepping truth to keep the peace, because the amplified emotional energy is genuinely uncomfortable.
Root Center
Location: Bottom of the BodyGraph. Function: Adrenaline, pressure to act, and stress.
The Root Center is both a motor and a pressure center. It generates adrenaline-based pressure — the biological urge to get things done and move forward. A defined Root Center handles pressure consistently and rhythmically. An undefined Root Center amplifies the stress and pressure of others. The not-self pattern is rushing — trying to complete everything on the to-do list just to make the pressure go away, rather than allowing things to resolve in their own timing.

Using the Centers
The nine Centers are the infrastructure through which all other elements of the chart operate. Channels run between them, Gates sit within them, and Type is determined by which Centers are defined and how they connect. Rather than treating defined Centers as strengths and undefined Centers as weaknesses, Human Design invites you to see defined Centers as your consistent nature and undefined Centers as your greatest potential for wisdom — once you learn to witness what moves through them rather than identify with it.
